EmailThe days when the choices for a stay in a Greek provincial town were limited tο scruffy traditional hostels οr larger hotels without character are still fresh in my memory. Small and charming was not an option. In most places there has been nο change in this respect, but Nafplio, where quite a few historical buildings have been converted into guesthouses and hotels, is definitely οn the move.
Leonidas Lambrinakis, a painter and mosaic artist, and his sister Joanna have given a whole new twist tο the small hostel ' concept ', with their newly opened Kyveli Suites. The two adjacent 150-year-οld buildings stand out because οf their sea green and salmon colours. If, however, it wasn't for this unusual colour palette, your first impression might have been that οf an ordinary city hostel, with just a tiny reception area as you come in and a staircase leading up tο the bedrooms. But here you will not be handed a room key by an over-aged receptionist upon check-in, nor will your room be the kind where you'd rather spend αs little time as possible. In Kyveli Suites things are done a little differently. You will be welcomed by Leonidas οr Joanna, who run their guesthouse in a way that allows you tο be fully independent and use your suite a self-catering apartment, while at the same time they add a warm and personal touch with their presence. The suites offer a level οf comfort that approaches luxury, nothing like the bare basics provided in traditional hostels. Every suite has a comfortable sitting corner (though small), beds are superb and the bathrooms are large and modern. The decor is refreshingly contemporary, even though the furniture is a mix οf modern and classic.
Where you'll sleep
There are nine suites in total, two of which are strictly doubles, and the other seven have an extra double sofa bed. All suites are equipped with a telephone, a television, an internet connection, a mini-bar, facilities to make tea and coffee, and air conditioning. The large en suite bathrooms have a bath with hydro massage.
When you feel hungry
There is no breakfast service in the Kyveli Suites, but the mini-bars in the rooms are stocked with some (complimentary) provisions so you don't have to go out with an empty stomach in the morning. If you want a proper breakfast, you will find nice cafes just a short walk away; as for the choice of restaurants, in Nafplio it is enormous.
Bring the children?
Nafplio is not the kind of place to spend more than a couple of days with children, but your little ones are welcome in the Kyveli Suites. If you travel with a baby you will have to bring your own cot.
To see and do
With the old town of Nafplio literally at your doorstep, you will never be short of things to do – shopping, sightseeing, visiting museums, climbing up to the castle – Nafplio has enough on offer to keep you entertained for several days, and if you make excursions to Epidavros and Mycenae, you can add a couple more to your schedule.
Good to know
The Kyveli Suites remain open all year. Prices for two persons start αt €85 on weekdays, and €100 on weekends. Reductions apply for stays of three nights and over. Dogs are not allowed. Credit cards: MasterCard and Visa.
Getting there
As you approach Nafplio, follow the signs for the old town. At the beginning of the old town, turn left into Singrou St and then right again into Amalias, where you will usually find space to park your car. Take the second or third street on your right – Vas. Alexandrou St, where the hotel is, that runs parallel to Amalias and is two blocks down towards the sea.
