A spherical or oval, light brown, thick-shelled nut from the European or North American hazel tree "Corylus avellana", with an outer husk that does not completely cover the nut. The nuts are small and pointed with a firmly attached skin, loosened by roasting or blanching. They have a distinctive flavour and are used in cooking, confectionery and as a dessert nut.
