How can the order of a drink affect your bank account…

By Panos Georgountzos

Do you know the cost of a bottle of wine in Syntagma Square? Of a bottle of champagne in New York? Of a cocktail in London maybe? The most exclusive outlets of all kinds have raised the value of the content of their crystal glasses to new heights. Lets “taste” together some of the best and of course most expensive of them.  If you happen to go to the well organized cellar of Selfridges in London, you might want to buy a couple of their best bottles of champagne. I would definitely propose the Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque at 1,000 euros for a 750ml bottle or if you don’t want to pay that, you might want to settle for a Krug Clos de Mesnil or a Louis Roederer Crystal rose that cost around 800 euros each. Nevertheless, if you were at Christies, a few blocks away from Selfridges,  on the 27th of September 2005, you could have bid for a Methuselah Luis Roederer Cristal 1990 for only $14,730.

Don’t think that things are very different with wine. At the “GB Corner” restaurant of the Grand Bretagne hotel at Syntagma Square of Athens, Greece, you can drink a bottle of Romanee Conti 1994, paying exactly 6,000 euros. If you ever go to “Le Cirque 2000” of New York, you ‘ll get the chance to try a Chateau Petrus ’82 for just $4,000. Of course it is very hard to believe the price that a bottle of Chateau Lafite 1787 that once belonged to American President Thomas Jefferson, reached in 2005, at an auction at Christies. The “lucky” buyer paid an enormous $160,000.

Cocktails are an open field for creation for blenders, since they can create a whole new drink from scratch. Thus, the limits of luxury are constantly being broken by new more luxurious creations. In the US, the most expensive cocktail these days, can be found at the “Metz”, the lounge bar of  Foxwood Resort Casino in Leydard, Connecticut. The Sapphire Martini, garnished with a pair of diamond and sapphire earrings, hanging from the edge of the glass, costs $3,000. At the top of this extravaganza we‘ll find the piano bar at the  Sheraton Park Tower Hotel in London. Apart from Charles Heidsieck 2001 champagne and Remy Martin Louis XIII cognac, in your glass you’ll find a selection of  diamonds and rubies that will raise the price of your cocktail at $4,350. Usually, we go to restaurants and bars in order to relax and thus we act spontaneously when it comes to ordering our drinks. Though, if you happen to be in one of the mentioned places, you should definitely ask for the pricelist before you order…
