Chestnut

The edible fruit or nut of the sweet chestnut tree "Castanea sativa", a native of southern Europe. It has a hard, woody, shiny, brown skin and a cream coloured interior containing more starch, but less protein and fat than most nuts. It is approximately the size of an apricot, and shaped like an onion. It can be peeled and eaten raw, or roasted, which is popular in Spain, Turkey, Greece and the Far East. When roasted its flavour is sweet and nutty.
